Ballantine’s Championship enjoys world-wide appeal

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Korea’s biggest golf tournament just got bigger – with some help from Two Up Front and world No.1 Lee Westwood.

The €2.2 million Ballantine’s Championship concluded last Sunday (1 May) with Westwood claiming a thrilling one-shot victory over Spanish veteran Miguel Ángel Jiménez to underline his status as the world’s best player.

The tournament – co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours and Korea PGA – was making its debut at Blackstone Golf Club near Seoul after the first three editions were played on the Korean holiday island of Jeju.

Two Up Front continued to play a key role in the tournament’s success, orchestrating a worldwide PR campaign and running the on-site media centre during event week.

“This was the most successful Ballantine’s Championship yet in terms of field quality and international media coverage,” said Two Up Front editorial director Niall Donnelly.

“Media interest in the tournament increased significantly as a result of the profile of the players and the move to a venue close to Seoul, so we adjusted our PR campaign to reflect these changes.

“More than 200 media attended this year’s Ballantine’s Championship and the result was unprecedented levels of coverage both domestically and overseas.

“We have been closely involved in the Ballantine’s Championship since its inception in 2008 and to witness first-hand the tournament’s growth and increasing success is highly gratifying.”

Two Up Front’s impressive golf CV includes handling worldwide PR and running media centres at almost 20 European Tour events in Asia.

The Hong Kong-based company recently acted as PR consultants to global watch giant Omega at the Mission Hills Star Trophy pro-celebrity tournament in China and it also organised last month’s launch press conference for the Ageas Corporate Golf League – Hong Kong’s first downtown inter-companies golf competition.

Soccer PR specialists add Baresi to their line-up

Monday, April 11th, 2011

Italian football giants AC Milan have engaged Two Up Front to publicise the launch of their Soccer Schools in Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong.

The Hong Kong company has been tasked with organising a press conference featuring the club’s legendary former captain, Franco Baresi, and orchestrating a PR campaign to raise awareness of the Soccer Schools.

“After working with Pelé just last month, we are delighted to maintain our association with world football’s elite,” said Two Up Front project director Simon Wait.

“Milan have won the European Cup – or Champions League, as it is now known – seven times, the second highest total of any club in Europe. And Baresi is one of the all-time greats, an Italian icon and role model in the way he conducted himself on and off the pitch.

“Club and player are footballing aristocrats and our aim is to provide a PR and media management service that matches their standards.”

Baresi spent his entire 20-year career with Milan, making 719 appearances – many of them as captain – and winning the Champions League three times and the Serie A title on six occasions. He also collected 81 Italy caps.

His press conference in Hong Kong has been tentatively scheduled for 16 May. Two Up Front’s role will include venue selection, organisation and implementation, and media management.

The press conference will be the centrepiece of a PR campaign designed to raise awareness of AC Milan Soccer Schools and encourage parents to enrol their children.

AC Milan Soccer Schools are being brought to the region by Hong Kong-based company Football for Life Limited.

The contract agreement with AC Milan Soccer Schools comes just five weeks after Two Up Front handled PR and media management for a visit to Hong Kong by Brazilian soccer great Pelé in his role as honorary president of the revived New York Cosmos.

Two Up Front currently plays a key role in the HKFC International Soccer Sevens and has previously worked with ex-Manchester United and England star Andy Cole and English Premier League referees’ chief Mike Riley, himself a former top match official.

Two Up Front also handles PR, event management and publishing in a range of other sports including golf, rugby and motor racing.

Tournament with a difference ready to take off

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Organisers of Hong Kong’s newest and most innovative golf tournament have turned to Two Up Front to publicise its launch.

The Ageas Corporate Golf League – Hong Kong’s first downtown inter-companies golf competition – will be staged at City Links Golf Lounge, the state-of-the-art indoor facility in The Centrium, Wyndham Street, Central.

Two Up Front will stage a press conference to officially announce the exciting new tournament and unveil the trophy.

“Hong Kong is famous for its entrepreneurial outlook and this new competition is typical of the city’s vision and ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking,” said Two Up Front editorial director Niall Donnelly.

“We’ve worked on almost 20 European Tour events in various PR, event management and publishing roles but this is a new venture for us. We think the Ageas Corporate Golf League is a brilliant idea and will be very popular with Hong Kong executives.”

Teams from eight leading companies will compete over seven weeks for the “War on Wyndham” trophy, a HK$20,000 donation to a charity of their choice and a golf weekend for two to Bangkok.

The competition, to be held from 12 April to 24 May, will utilise City Links’ four simulators, with teams playing seven of the world’s most famous courses – the “home of golf” St Andrews, Pebble Beach, Kapalua Plantation, Spyglass Hill, The Belfry, Valderrama and Torrey Pines.

The Ageas Corporate Golf League adds to Two Up Front’s extensive golf portfolio which currently includes handling PR and media management for Korea’s biggest tournament, the Ballantine’s Championship.

In addition the company works in a range of other sports including rugby, soccer and motor racing.

Rwandan rugby reflects on outstanding tour

Friday, April 1st, 2011

Rwanda’s rugby players have returned home after another hugely successful tour to Hong Kong in which Two Up Front once again played a key role.

The sports PR company continued its pro bono work for the Rwandan Rugby Federation, helping increase media and public awareness of the team’s achievements and the positive effect these are having on the East African country’s burgeoning rugby scene.

“Since we started working with the Rwandans some 15 months ago, rugby in the country has undergone a revolution,” said Two Up Front project director Simon Wait.

“The national team has undertaken two successful tours to Hong Kong which have generated a massive amount of positive publicity and resulted in generous kit and equipment donations from Hong Kong clubs.

“More young players have taken up the sport in Rwanda and the world famous Penguins Coaching Academy has visited the country to conduct a series of clinics.

“And the icing on the cake is that the Rwandan Rugby Federation has at last secured a home pitch in the capital, Kigali, meaning the sport now has a proper base from which it can continue to grow.”

Rwanda’s national team, the Silverbacks, reached the Cup semi-finals in last week’s Altus Kowloon RugbyFest and then completed a Level 1 coaching course organised by the Penguins Coaching Academy.

Many of the players also took part in the annual Bali Memorial Game at Hong Kong Football Club. The match, between the Pot Bellied Pigs RFC and HKFC Vandals, has been played every year since 2003 in memory of those who lost their lives in the 2002 Bali bombings, including 12 players and supporters from Hong Kong.

The entire Rwandan squad then attended the iconic Hong Kong Sevens, enjoying the atmosphere of the tournament’s infamous South Stand.

The Silverbacks took home dozens of brand new sets of playing strip, hundreds of unused boots, plus tracksuits, training gear and T-shirts – all donated by the Hong Kong rugby community. The equipment will be given to teams competing in Rwanda, where enthusiasm is plentiful but decent kit is more difficult to come by.

The collection – centred at the Harbour Plaza Hotel in North Point – was organised by Hong Kong Rugby Football Union director of development Ruth Mitchell, who co-ordinated a similar initiative during Rwanda’s first tour a year ago.

Two Up Front’s rugby portfolio includes publishing the official souvenir programme and pocket guide for the Hong Kong Sevens.

In addition, the company handles PR for the Ballantine’s Championship golf tournament in Korea and the HKFC International Soccer Sevens in Hong Kong.

Pelé mania follows successful PR campaign

Friday, March 11th, 2011

Soccer icon Pelé proved a massive hit with media and fans alike in Hong Kong after a successful PR campaign orchestrated by Two Up Front.

The Brazilian superstar’s visit to the territory made headlines around the world after he spoke to journalists, held meetings with business leaders and was photographed conducting a coaching clinic for youngsters.

Pelé – widely acknowledged as the game’s greatest ever player – visited Hong Kong from 6-9 March in his role as honorary president of the revived New York Cosmos.

Two Up Front, tasked with handling PR and media management for the tour, organised a press conference at Hong Kong’s landmark Peninsula hotel which was attended by more than 70 members of the media.

As part of its media management role, the company co-ordinated a special one-on-one interview with Pelé for CNN’s renowned Talk Asia programme, which profiles leading newsmakers in business, politics, entertainment and sport and is broadcast to some 260 million people.

Two Up Front also supervised journalists and photographers when Pelé visited Hong Kong Football Club to oversee a coaching clinic for youngsters – an event that drew hundreds of fans.

In addition, the company organised dedicated videography and photography crews to follow Pelé and the Cosmos entourage during their Hong Kong trip, thus providing Cosmos executives with key promotional materials for their attempt to become an expansion team in Major League Soccer.

“Pelé’s visit to Hong Kong was a huge success on every level,” said Two Up Front editorial director Niall Donnelly. “The PR and media management strategies we put in place ensured huge numbers of Hong Kong’s passionate football fans were aware of his visit and that dozens of different media outlets had access to him.

“The feedback from the Cosmos was extremely positive and we feel we fully vindicated their decision to go with Two Up Front as their sports agency of choice in Hong Kong. We look forward to working with them again when they return to the Asian marketplace.”

Two Up Front currently handles PR and publishing for the HKFC International Soccer Sevens at Hong Kong Football Club – the world’s premier seven-a-side football tournament.

The company has previously worked with personalities such as Manchester United great Andy Cole, Nottingham Forest and England legend Des Walker and top Premier League referee Mike Riley.

In addition, Two Up Front has extensive PR and publishing experience in a number of other sports including rugby, golf, motor racing and cricket.

Soccer PR experts team up with legendary Pelé

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Two Up Front has scored against its soccer rivals by signing an agreement to work with the game’s greatest ever player, Pelé.

The sports specialists will handle PR and media management when the Brazilian icon visits Hong Kong from 6-9 March in his role as honorary president of the revived New York Cosmos.

Pelé will oversee a coaching clinic for kids, give motivational talks and, together with other Cosmos executives including club chairman Paul Kemsley, meet business leaders. The goodwill visit is part of the 2011 New York Cosmos Asia Tour.

“As a sports PR company and, moreover, as huge football fans, we are thrilled to be working with the greatest player of all time,” said Two Up Front editorial director Niall Donnelly.

“There is bound to be massive media and public interest in his visit and we are relishing the chance to play a key role in making it a success. The Cosmos approached us due to our significant experience and expertise in football PR and we feel confident we will meet their high expectations for this venture.”

Pelé won three World Cups with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and 1970 and then, after retiring from international football, finished his career by playing for the Cosmos from 1975-77, helping transform the soccer landscape in North America.

He has rejoined the Cosmos as honorary president as the revived club looks to attract investors and field a new team in North America’s top competition, Major League Soccer, from 2013.

Slash concert to strike a chord with rugby fans

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

Two Up Front is making its first foray into the music industry with an agreement to help handle PR for the forthcoming Hong Kong concert by iconic rock guitarist Slash.

The man behind the Guns N’ Roses mega hit Sweet Child O’ Mine will be kicking off Hong Kong Sevens week with a gig at Star Hall KITEC on Tuesday 22 March.

Two Up Front has signed a deal with concert promoter LAMC Productions (HK) Ltd to conduct a PR campaign that will specifically target rugby fans.

Sweet Child O’ Mine is one of the signature songs of the Sevens and the gig is sure to appeal to the many rugby fans who attend, whether they are living in Hong Kong or visiting from overseas,” said Two Up Front project director Simon Wait.

“With our strong background in rugby PR and publishing, plus our extensive contacts in the sport, LAMC Productions felt we would be the perfect partner to help reach out to the rugby community.

“We’re excited to be venturing into what is a new field for Two Up Front and the Slash concert will make Sevens week even more fantastic than usual.”

Sweet Child O’ Mine has grown into a Sevens anthem, with fans greeting its unmistakable guitar intro with huge roars of approval. Slash’s live appearance in Hong Kong promises to be a memorable evening of rock ‘n’ roll and a fitting way to get the party started before the Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens on 25-27 March.

Having made his name with Guns N’ Roses and earned a reputation as one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time, Slash is now flying solo and released his eponymous album Slash last April.

Singing with Slash will be renowned vocalist Myles Kennedy from rock group Alter Bridge while other members of his band will be Bobby Schneck (guitar), Todd Kerns (bass) and Brent Fitz (drums).

The Slash concert increases Two Up Front’s central role in a busy Sevens week. The company already publishes the official souvenir programme and pocket guide for the Sevens and will once again act as PR consultants to the Rwandan national rugby team, who will be playing in the Altus Kowloon RugbyFest in the lead-up to the Sevens.

Rwanda’s return set to generate more positive headlines

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Rwanda’s pioneering national rugby players will return to Hong Kong in March and Two Up Front will once again play a key role in raising awareness and generating positive publicity for the team.

The Silverbacks – named after Rwanda’s signature mountain gorillas – will make their second appearance in the Altus Kowloon RugbyFest and undertake an IRB coaching course.

Two Up Front staff will once again donate their PR services and networking expertise free of charge to help ensure the tour is a success both on and off the pitch.

“The Rwandans’ first visit to Hong Kong earlier this year was a tremendously worthwhile exercise and we’re very happy to be involved in their return,” said Two Up Front editorial director Niall Donnelly.

“Like many in the Hong Kong rugby community, we will be pitching in to help. The more positive publicity we can attract, the better it is for the development of Rwandan rugby.”

The Silverbacks captured the imagination of press and public alike with their historic 11-day trip to Hong Kong, their first tour beyond East Africa, last March. Their ground-breaking visit was covered by TV news crews, documentary makers, radio reporters, newspapers and websites – resulting in an avalanche of positive publicity.

The PR campaign surrounding the Rwandans’ visit was organised by Two Up Front. In addition, the company used its extensive rugby connections to help arrange training sessions with elite teams and a coaching course conducted by the renowned Penguins Coaching Academy.

The Rwandans capped their tour by attending the world famous Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens as spectators.

Their historic visit resulted in numerous benefits back in Rwanda. More young players took up the sport while playing kit and equipment donated by Hong Kong clubs was put to good use.

Two of Scotland’s top coaches – former national team coach Frank Hadden and Scottish Rugby Union referee development manager Colin Brett – visited the country last month to conduct a series of clinics, once again organised by the Penguins Coaching Academy.

And the Rwandan Rugby Federation is close to securing a home pitch, with talks on leasing a playing field in the capital, Kigali, entering the final stages.

The 2011 Altus Kowloon RugbyFest will take place on 23 March and the Silverbacks will be aiming to improve on their previous appearance when they reached the second-tier Plate final.

Two Up Front currently handles PR for the Ballantine’s Championship golf tournament in Korea and the HKFC IP Global International Soccer Sevens in Hong Kong.

In addition, the company publishes the official souvenir programme and pocket guide for the Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens.

Magnificent seventh for programme and pocket guide

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Organisers of the world famous Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens have once again engaged Two Up Front to publish the tournament’s official souvenir programme and pocket guide.

It will be the seventh year in a row that the Hong Kong company has produced the vaunted publication, which renowned commentator Nigel Starmer-Smith has gone on record as saying is “as good as any souvenir rugby programme that I have encountered over the years covering rugby around the world”.

“We’re delighted that the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union has once again asked us to research, edit, design and publish the Sevens programme and pocket guide,” said Two Up Front editorial director Niall Donnelly.

“Our vision when we came on board in 2005 was to produce a publication which matched the world class standards and reputation of the tournament and the feedback from the HKRFU, teams and fans is that we have consistently achieved that goal.

“As ever, the challenge will be to innovate and improve while retaining the core features of the programme and pocket guide which have proved so popular over the years.”

The Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens will be held from 25-27 March, 2011. The tournament is universally regarded as the biggest and most prestigious event in the annual IRB Sevens World Series.

Since Two Up Front began publishing the souvenir programme and pocket guide, the dual publication has sold out every year.

Two Up Front also publishes the official programme – and handles global PR – for the HKFC IP Global International Soccer Sevens, which is held at Hong Kong Football Club each May.

The company recently acted as PR consultants to global watch giant Omega at the Mission Hills Star Trophy pro-celebrity golf tournament in China.

In addition, Two Up Front currently handles worldwide PR and media management for Korea’s biggest golf tournament, the Ballantine’s Championship, which is co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours.

Raising a toast to Ballantine’s PR agreement

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Two Up Front has extended its contract to handle worldwide PR and media management for Korea’s biggest golf tournament, the Ballantine’s Championship.

The Hong Kong company has played a key role in the tournament’s success since it was first held in 2008 and the new agreement means the sports PR specialists will remain on board for the 2011 edition.

After the first three tournaments were played at Pinx Golf Club on the Korean holiday island of Jeju, the 2011 event will move to the prestigious Blackstone Resort near Seoul.

“Having been associated with the Ballantine’s Championship from the beginning, we are very pleased to maintain our involvement in the tournament,” commented Two Up Front project director Simon Wait after the contract extension was agreed with event promoter Parallel Media Group.

“The feedback from the title sponsor and all other stakeholders has been very positive and the challenge, as always, will be to continue raising media and public awareness of the Ballantine’s Championship as the tournament enters an exciting new era with its move to the Korean capital.”

Around 180 domestic and overseas journalists and photographers attended the 2010 tournament, which featured star players such as Ernie Els, Anthony Kim, YE Yang, Henrik Stenson and Graeme McDowell. The event was won by Australia’s Marcus Fraser.

The 2011 Ballantine’s Championship – to be held from 28 April to 1 May – will once again be co-sanctioned by the European Tour, Asian Tour and Korea PGA.

Blackstone Resort, in Icheon, just south of Seoul, will host the event for at least the next three years. It is the first time that the exclusive venue – which opened only in 2009 and has just 300 members – has staged a professional tournament.

Two Up Front recently acted as PR consultants to global watch giant Omega at the Mission Hills Star Trophy pro-celebrity golf tournament in China.

The company also handles global PR – and publishes the official programme – for the HKFC IP Global International Soccer Sevens at Hong Kong Football Club each May.

In addition, the company publishes the acclaimed official souvenir programme and pocket guide for one of the world’s great rugby spectacles, the Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens.
