Hong Kong coach Ernie Merrick is looking to give more young players exposure at international level after naming an expanded training squad ahead of his second match in charge, against Singapore.
Two players – Hong Kong Sapling defender Chan Cham Hei and Biu Chun Rangers striker Lam Hok Hei – are promoted from the U22s to make their first appearance in the senior squad.
The squad will train on 17 and 24 April and again on 22 and 24 May before taking on Singapore in a friendly at Hong Kong Stadium on 1 June.
Mindful that Kitchee and Citizen’s AFC Cup commitments have given them a busy fixture schedule, Merrick is allowing players from those two clubs to skip the April training sessions.
In their absence, he has called up players from the U22s squad to give them more experience.
“In all, we have five players from the U22s training with the seniors and it is my intention to have a good look at them and possibly retain one or two in the final squad,” said Merrick.
“Chan and Lam are two who have stood out while playing for their clubs and in training with the U22s, so I’m delighted to bring them into the seniors.”
Hong Kong have also been boosted by the news that TSW Pegasus striker Godfred Karikari will soon be eligible to make his international debut. The Ghanaian-born star has been resident in Hong Kong since 2002.
“Godfred has completed all the paperwork and has been accepted by the relevant authorities, now he is just awaiting his passport, which should be ready in a couple of weeks,” confirmed Merrick. “He is a proven goalscorer with the top team in the league so he is a huge addition to the squad.”
Karikari’s English-born teammate Jaimes McKee is also in one of Merrick’s squads for the first time. McKee came to Hong Kong with his family when he was a child and has previously played for Hong Kong Football Club and Kitchee before moving to TSW Pegasus last summer.
“Jaimes wants to play for Hong Kong and so his papers are being processed,” explained Merrick. “He featured against Guangdong earlier in the season, but that was OK since it was not a full international. He’s quick and he’s scoring goals for his club, so it makes sense to have a look at him even though he is not yet eligible.”
Hong Kong will go into the Singapore match looking to build on their winning start under new coach Merrick, having scored an emphatic 5-1 victory over Chinese Taipei at Mongkok Stadium on 29 February.
They will also play a return fixture in Singapore on 15 August in what will be their first away match with Merrick in charge.
