Motor racing summit shows business is booming

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Two Up Front continues to set the pace in motor racing PR after playing a key role at the historic Business of Motorsports in Asia summit.

The Hong Kong-based company was brought in for its media knowledge and expertise by conference organisers Singapore Exchange (SGX) and Just Marketing International (JMI).

Two Up Front handled worldwide PR, issued media invitations and helped with on-site media management when the summit was held on Friday 24 September at the SGX Auditorium in Singapore.

Speakers included Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, UBS Group CEO Oswald Grübel and JMI founder and CEO Zak Brown. The keynote address was given by S Iswaran, Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Education.

The conference attracted around 180 delegates – comprising senior executives and business leaders – from across Asia and was organised to coincide with the F1 Singapore Grand Prix.

“It was a new and exciting venture for us to be involved on the business side of motor racing,” said Two Up Front editorial director Niall Donnelly.

“We thoroughly enjoyed working alongside SGX and JMI in publicising the conference and managing the business media – and the feedback from delegates and journalists was very positive.”

Delegates were told that with more than a quarter of F1 races now taking place in Asia, the sport offered unprecedented business opportunities for the region’s key companies.

Two Up Front’s next motor racing event will be the Hong Kong launch party for the China leg of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup. The VIP evening will be held at one of the hottest venues in town, the brand new Republik club in Hollywood Road, Central, on Tuesday 19 October.

Business leaders and society figures will join drivers, race officials and sponsors at the launch to publicise the race, the 1,000km of Zhuhai, which will be staged in southern China from 5-7 November.

Two Up Front has an excellent track record in motorsport, having previously handled worldwide PR – and organised the official launch party – for Hong Kong’s first Le Mans racing team.

The company has also handled PR for Team of Paris, one of the most successful teams at Macau’s annual Grand Prix weekend.

Two Up Front also handles worldwide PR and media management for the HKFC IP Global International Soccer Sevens and Korea’s biggest golf tournament, the Ballantine’s Championship, which is co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours.

In addition, the company produces the official souvenir programme and pocket guide for the world famous Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament, the biggest and most prestigious event in the IRB Sevens World Series.

Ecclestone bullish on Formula 1 in Asia

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Bernie Ecclestone believes Asia is central to the motorsports industry in general and Formula 1™ in particular.

“People used to say, ‘Go west, young man,’ but now the world is moving east,” the F1 supremo told an audience of senior executives and business leaders at “The Business of Motorsports in Asia” conference in Singapore on Friday (24 September).

“Formula 1 has gone worldwide and we have opened a lot of people’s eyes to the sport, but it has taken us a long time to achieve that.”

Ecclestone also highlighted recent global partnership agreements that F1 had signed with Korean electronics giant LG and Swiss bank UBS and said these had generated further confidence in the sport to the benefit of teams. “There are an awful lot of companies who want to get involved in Formula 1,” he said.

UBS Group CEO Oswald Grübel told the audience he hoped the bank would move forward in conjunction with F1, especially in Asia, and that it was a partnership that made perfect sense.

“We hope we are growing in the Asian market as fast as Formula 1 is growing. Asia will be the world’s biggest growth area for at least the next 10 years,” he said.

The Business of Motorsports in Asia conference, attended by 180 delegates from across the region, was organised by Singapore Exchange (SGX) and Just Marketing International (JMI).

A stellar cast of speakers with first-hand knowledge of F1 gave the audience a unique insight into the fast-expanding motorsports industry and its implications for Asia.

The summit was timed to coincide with the 2010 Formula 1™ Singtel Singapore Grand Prix.

Delegates were told that with more than a quarter of F1 World Championship races now taking place in Asia, the sport offered unprecedented business opportunities for the region’s key companies.

In his keynote address, Mr S Iswaran, Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Education, said bringing F1 to the city-state had resulted in huge benefits.

“The impact of F1 is far reaching and can be felt beyond the tourism landscape,” he said. “It has galvanized companies and community groups to ride on its momentum and organize events around the F1 race to involve the community and businesses at large.”

“Motorsports events such as the F1 race offer unprecedented exposure for businesses and, in turn, generate opportunities for the region’s key companies. Today’s summit is a good opportunity for companies in the region to network and capitalize on spin-offs brought by the anchoring of the Formula 1 race in Singapore.”

Magnus Böcker, Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Exchange, said the summit was an opportunity for SGX to help customers grow their businesses.

“The qualities and characteristics of F1 resonate well with Singapore Exchange and I am very encouraged that our customers have expressed strong interest and are telling us how this summit could potentially help them in expanding their global network through the association with established global brands,” he said.

Joining SGX and JMI in support of The Business of Motorsports in Asia were the Economic Development Board (EBD) Singapore, Singapore Tourism Board (STB), Singapore Sports Council and media partners including The Business Times of Singapore and Channel NewsAsia.

Zak Brown, Founder and CEO of JMI, the world’s largest marketing agency dedicated exclusively to motorsports, told the conference that Asian companies were becoming more aware of the opportunities on offer.

“There is a growing roll call of Asian corporations that have successfully parlayed motorsports sponsorships into brand-enhancing positions, including Aigo, AirAsia, LG, Kingfisher, Petronas and Singtel,” he said. “In summary, Asia and motorsports are going fast – and growing fast.”

Ballantine’s Championship makes capital move

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

The Ballantine’s Championship will enter a new era in 2011 when it moves to one of Korea’s most prestigious golf clubs, Blackstone Resort in Seoul.

It will be the first time that the exclusive venue – which opened only last year and has just 300 members – has hosted a professional tournament.

The first three editions of the €2.2 million Ballantine’s Championship were played at Pinx Golf Club on the Korean holiday island of Jeju.

“The move to Blackstone is an exciting next step in the tournament’s development – a chance to showcase it to even more people and realise its huge potential,” said David Ciclitira, chairman of event promoter Parallel Media Group.

“We want to create something that is beyond a golf tournament and this new venue close to Korea’s capital will provide the platform to achieve that.

“We enjoyed three wonderful years at Pinx and it was only after much deliberation that we made the decision to move to Seoul.

“The people at Pinx were fantastic hosts and their contribution towards establishing the Ballantine’s Championship as a hugely significant Asian golf tournament will always be remembered.”

The 2011 Ballantine’s Championship – once again co-sanctioned by the European Tour, Asian Tour and Korea PGA – will be played at Blackstone Resort in Icheon, just south of Seoul, from 28 April to 1 May. The club will host the event for at least the next three years.

Keith Waters, chief operating officer of the European Tour, said the move would raise the tournament’s profile even higher.

“The Ballantine’s Championship over the last three years has become firmly established as one of the premier events in the Asian region and this move to Blackstone, a world class venue close to the capital Seoul, will further enhance the tournament’s credentials,” he said.

“We thank Ballantine’s for their vision and continued commitment to developing the Championship, the Korea PGA and the event promoter PMG for their support.”

Designed by the highly reputable JMP Golf Design Group, the stunning Blackstone Resort features magnificent ridgeline views, creeks and lakes, and secluded forest glens.

It has three nine-hole courses, North, East and West. The tournament will be played on the 7,314-yard, par-72 North and West layout.

“We are very excited to be hosting the Ballantine’s Championship and are looking forward to welcoming an array of world class players to our club,” said Blackstone Resort chief executive officer Greg Won.

“Tom Watson was a recent visitor and he was extremely impressed by what he saw. We think Blackstone is the perfect venue for this tournament and we anticipate some thrilling action and a memorable week.”

Commenting on the announcement, Peter Moore, global brand director, Ballantine’s said: “Ballantine’s and golf share a long history and are enjoyed together throughout the world. In Korea, there are five million golfers, many of whom are whisky drinkers making it a very important market for Ballantine’s.

“With this move, we are confident that the Ballantine’s Championship will go from strength-to-strength by attracting new players and visitors, and subsequently offer us the opportunity to continue to build our heritage and credibility in the world of golf.”

The Ballantine’s Championship has provided some dramatic moments in its three-year history. Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell showed his Major-winning potential when he captured the inaugural event on the third extra hole against India’s Jeev Milkha Singh, while Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee emerged triumphant when he birdied the first hole of a three-way playoff in 2009.

The 2010 tournament produced an unforgettable finale as unheralded Australian Marcus Fraser – a player who almost gave up the game three years earlier because he was in such a slump – surprised everyone with an incredible wire-to-wire victory.
