VTP Challenge will put runners on a high

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Hong Kong’s Central district will witness a morning rush hour with a difference when more than 350 runners take part in the second annual Victoria to Peak (VTP) Challenge on 1 October.

On the paths and steps where many of them would normally walk to work, the enthusiasts will swap their pinstripes for running gear as they compete in one of the most spectacular and scenic 10K races to be found anywhere in the world.

Starting from Pier 9 next to the Star Ferry, the field will follow a carefully plotted route between the skyscrapers and malls of Central up to Mid-Levels and on to the finish at the Peak, passing some of Hong Kong’s most iconic buildings and famous landmarks along the way.

With an elevation gain of almost 400 metres, the VTP Challenge presents a stern test to runners of all ages and abilities. Volunteers will act as race marshals to enhance road safety and ensure athletes stay on the correct route.

“It is a recreational athlete’s dream to be able to run through the heart of the city in this manner,” said Freeman Lee of Club Balance (www.clubbalance.org), the group organising the event.

“The VTP Challenge allows them to do this in a safe and controlled environment where concerns about other pedestrians and traffic are minimised and they can just concentrate on enjoying the run.

“While it is a testing course, the accent is very much on fun, enjoyment and community spirit, and in some cases we will have entire families taking part. The race is open to athletes of all levels and it is perfectly OK to walk on some of the steepest parts.”

The event will begin at 7:30am on 1 October – the Chinese National Day public holiday – with elite runners expected to finish in just under an hour. There will be a two-hour cut-off.

The community spirit will continue after the race with all runners and volunteers receiving a complimentary breakfast at Café Deco in the Peak Galleria.

Part of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the Hong Kong Arthritis & Rheumatism Foundation (www.hkarf.org).

The overall winner in each of the race’s three main categories – Male, Female and Family – will receive a two-night hotel package courtesy of Starwood Hotels & Resorts. Other category winners will receive prizes from Plantronics and Champion System.

Sponsorship of Club Balance as well as the VTP 2010 prizes has been made possible by the kind support of: RBS Coutts Bank, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Plantronics, Latham & Watkins, Edwin Yeung & Company (CPA) Limited, Champion System, Bonaqua and Optimum Nutrition.

About Club Balance

Club Balance is a non-profit, volunteer-based organisation founded in 2009 by a group of professionals who are also sports enthusiasts. Our members come from a wide range of professions, from dentistry to banking and law. The founders’ informal weekly runs, which started as early as 1995, eventually evolved into a broader effort to promote work-life balance within the professional communities in Hong Kong.

Club Balance events provide a platform for participants to engage their family and friends through fun activities and/or meals. Participants are also encouraged to invite their loved ones to help out and provide moral support at Club Balance events they participate in.

The Victoria to Peak Challenge

Open to only 350 runners (a family team counts as one), the race starts at 7:30am from Victoria Harbour’s Pier 9 (next to the Star Ferry) on 1 October and ends at the Peak Galleria. While parents in the Family Category start from Pier 9, children in the Family Category wait on Barker Road and start running with their parents when they arrive.

The entry fee is just HK$280 per person and HK$450 per family. It entitles each entrant to a runner’s post-race breakfast at Café Deco, commemorative T-shirt, drinks en-route and helps cover some nominal race costs.

The Hong Kong Arthritis & Rheumatism Foundation

The effects of arthritis go beyond just aching hands and trouble opening a jar. Some forms of arthritis can pose serious health risks, not to mention the effect of arthritis on family members. In support of its aim of promoting work-life balance and better health amongst Hong Kong’s professionals, Club Balance is proud to support the efforts of the foundation to improve the understanding of arthritis and rheumatic conditions commonly seen in Hong Kong, and to improve the health-related quality of life of people with these disorders.

Hong Kong tour sparks Rwandan rugby boom

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Rugby in Rwanda is booming after the national team’s historic tour to Hong Kong earlier this year.

Youngsters are taking up the sport in impressive numbers while the East African country is also attracting more and more women players.

And Rwanda’s fast expanding rugby scene will be given another boost in late November when three coaches from the famous Penguins academy pay a five-day visit to conduct a series of clinics.

“These are exciting times for Rwandan rugby,” confirmed Dave Hughes, organiser of last March’s visit to Hong Kong by the national team, the Silverbacks.

“There are now seven fully functioning and active rugby clubs in the country and the army and police also play the sport.

“One club, the Sharks, now have two youth teams, whereas before they didn’t have any, and the Buffalos also have a new youth team.

“And whereas previously clubs would enter just one team in a sevens tournament, most of them now enter two.”

Many of the teams in Rwanda are playing in kit donated by Hong Kong clubs.

Hong Kong Rugby Football Union director of development Ruth Mitchell organised a hugely successful kit collection during the Silverbacks’ visit.

The players returned to Rwanda with more than 40 bin bags packed with unused team strips donated by the likes of Hong Kong Football Club, DeA Tigers and Valley.

“We recently organised a tournament in the capital, Kigali, and it was heart-warming to see so many of the teams kitted out in Hong Kong club strips,” said Hughes.

“Ruth did an incredible job organising the collection and the response from the Hong Kong rugby community was overwhelming.”

The Silverbacks – named after Rwanda’s signature mountain gorillas – made a huge impression both on and off the pitch during their 11-day tour to Hong Kong.

They finished as Plate runners-up in the inProjects Kowloon RugbyFest, a 10-a-side tournament featuring 14 teams from around the world.

South African rugby great Bob Skinstad was among the impressed spectators and immediately gave them an open invitation to play in the Cape Town Tens, the tournament he co-founded last year.

The Silverbacks also trained with two elite touring teams, Aliens from New Zealand and Penguins from the UK, while Penguins staff put them through a first-level IRB coaching course.

The team then attended the world famous Hong Kong Sevens courtesy of the HKRFU, who waived the cost of tickets.

The trip was a life-changing experience for the players and especially captain Djuma-Adams Mugabo, who grew up homeless on the streets of Kigali, selling cigarettes for a living, before taking up rugby.

An anonymous benefactor who read Mugabo’s inspiring tale stepped forward to fund his further education, meaning the Silverbacks skipper will start college later this year.

The Rwandan rugby community is now eagerly awaiting the visit by the Penguins coaching team which will comprise two Scottish Rugby Union employees – U18s head coach Grant McKelvey and referee development manager Colin Brett – plus Penguins manager Craig Brown.

“Their visit is already generating huge excitement and it shows just how far we have come in a short time that we are going to have international-level coaches conducting clinics in the country,” said Hughes. “It will have a massive impact on rugby development in Rwanda.”

Hughes, a Hong Kong-born rugby enthusiast and Rwanda volunteer worker, has two priorities in the months ahead.

The first is to organise the Silverbacks’ return to Hong Kong next March and, he hopes, take up Skinstad’s offer to play in the Cape Town Tens a few weeks before that.

The second is to secure land for a purpose-built rugby pitch and clubhouse in Kigali. At present, all games are played on a threadbare school field.

“We’re aiming to secure enough corporate backing to achieve all these objectives,” said Hughes. “The first tour to Hong Kong really raised awareness of Rwandan rugby and we’re determined to build on that.”

Bledisloe Cup contract agreed with HKRFU

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

Rugby giants New Zealand and Australia are returning to Hong Kong and Two Up Front will once again play a key role in the high-profile fixture.

The company has reached an agreement with the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union to write, design and produce the official souvenir programme.

It is the second time Two Up Front has been entrusted with the programme, having also been publisher when New Zealand and Australia played the first ever overseas Bledisloe Cup match, in Hong Kong, in 2008.

The All Blacks and Wallabies will meet at the Hong Kong Stadium on Saturday, 30 October. It will be the fourth and final test in the 2010 series after earlier encounters in Melbourne (31 July), Christchurch (7 August) and Sydney (11 September).

“We are delighted to once again be playing a key role in this high-profile and eagerly anticipated rugby fixture,” said Two Up Front project director Simon Wait.

“The 2008 programme was very popular with fans and we received excellent feedback from the Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australian rugby unions.

“Naturally, we will be aiming to once again produce a publication that is full of quality in terms of design and content and we will ensure it is totally in keeping with a sports event of this magnitude.”

Two Up Front also produces the official souvenir programme and pocket guide for the world famous Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament, the biggest and most prestigious event in the IRB Sevens World Series.

In addition, the company handles worldwide PR and media management for the HKFC IP Global International Soccer Sevens and Korea’s biggest golf tournament, the Ballantine’s Championship, which is co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours.
