Stenson aiming to build on improvement

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Henrik Stenson will tee off in the Ballantine’s Championship buoyed by a top 10 finish last week and the feeling that his game is coming together.

The Swede – a six-time winner on the European Tour – is one of the leading contenders at the €2.2 million showpiece, which starts on Thursday (22 April) at Pinx Golf Club on the island of Jeju in Korea.

He is looking to kick on after last week’s China Open where he finished strongly, leaping from 34th after two rounds to wind up joint eighth.

“I played all right last week and I think any tournament where you finish top 10 is a pretty good week,” he said. “I’m moving along and yes, I’ve got a bit to go, but I hope to be able to have a decent week here as well.

“I need a few more rounds and possibly a few more good weeks of practice before it’s all there but, yes, I’m feeling OK.”

Stenson finished five shots behind winner YE Yang in Shanghai. “I wasn’t that far off in the end,” he added. “I expect to be up there and giving myself a decent chance to win on the weekend at regular events.”

The Swede took part in last year’s Ballantine’s Championship when the final two rounds were played in unusually cold and windy conditions.

“I know the course and it hasn’t changed much from last year,” he said. “You can reach pretty much all the par fives in two so you can obviously have a good day and make a few birdies or hopefully an eagle.

“It’s all going to depend on the weather how low the scoring is going to be. We still had a few holes to play today [in the pro-am] and before we finished the wind really kicked in, it was blowing pretty hard. It’s a different golf course when you’ve got a 30 mile an hour wind, that’s for sure.

“The key to playing in the wind is always controlling your ball flight, and I’ve had lots of good finishes in the past in difficult circumstances. I think I’m reasonably good at grinding it out and playing well in tough conditions.”

Stenson is joined in the Ballantine’s Championship by Yang, world No.7 Ernie Els and three-time PGA Tour winner Anthony Kim. The tournament is once again co-sanctioned by the European Tour, Asian Tour and Korea PGA.

Fit-again Thongchai ready for title defence

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Thongchai Jaidee says he is “90 per cent” recovered from his recent elbow injury and is ready to defend his title at this week’s Ballantine’s Championship in Korea.

The injury – diagnosed as a muscle strain – forced him to withdraw during the second round of the Masters two weeks ago and he subsequently received treatment from a specialist attached to the Atlanta Hawks basketball team.

It healed sufficiently for him to finish joint eighth in last week’s China Open and he heads into the €2.2 million Ballantine’s Championship believing he is fully on the mend.

“The doctor gave me a cortisone injection and told me that with four days’ rest I could play in the next tournament,” revealed Thongchai. “He was a very good doctor and gave me a good chance to play last week.

“If I hadn’t got better, I would have cancelled last week and gone home. But I got to Shanghai and decided I could play and had a top 10 finish, so this week I hope it’s better again. It’s about 90 per cent right now. I practised nine holes yesterday and hit the ball very well.”

The Thai ace is eagerly looking forward to the Ballantine’s Championship at Pinx Golf Club on the picturesque island of Jeju, scene of his victory 12 months ago.

“The course is in great condition, it’s a good layout and very challenging,” he said. “We have a lot of strong players here this week, guys like Ernie Els, Anthony Kim and YE Yang and all the big names.

“It’s looking like a very good tournament. I have good memories of last year and I feel very comfortable playing here, so I hope to do well again this year.”

Thongchai battled through freakishly cold and windy conditions at Pinx last year for the biggest win of his career.

He forced a playoff against Spain’s Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño and local hero Kang Sung Hoon, then sank a six-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to claim his fourth European Tour title.

Thongchai said his experience of playing in Europe had helped him cope with Jeju’s famously blustery conditions.

“I’ve spent about seven years on the European Tour and I’ve learned a lot, especially from playing on links courses,” he revealed. “The weather is almost the same as here. You have to keep the ball low. I practised a lot hitting the ball low and tried to get better every year.

“I looked at the weather forecast and it will be windy tomorrow, but hopefully for just one day. This golf course, if the wind is blowing, it’s difficult to play. The par threes are tough. But if you can get the ball on the green, then you can have a lot of good birdie chances.”

Also in the Ballantine’s Championship field are Henrik Stenson, who has six European Tour titles to his name, and the event’s 2008 winner, Graeme McDowell.

The tournament, which tees off on Thursday (22 April), is once again co-sanctioned by the European Tour, Asian Tour and Korea PGA.

Kim targets Korea for first overseas victory

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Anthony Kim is keen to win a tournament outside the United States for the first time and he would love it to happen in Korea, his parents’ homeland.

The PGA Tour ace is one of the leading contenders at this week’s Ballantine’s Championship, which takes place at Pinx Golf Club on the Korean holiday island of Jeju.

“I’m so excited to see some Korean faces in the gallery and hopefully I can make them all proud,” Kim told reporters on Tuesday (20 April).

“I’m very excited and honoured to be here in Korea, and I’ve been looking forward to coming back to this tournament for a long time. I want to thank Ballantine’s for having me back.

“As far as my form is concerned, I’ve been scoring well. I’m pretty happy about how I’m playing, but mostly about how I’m chipping and putting. So if I can keep that up, I should be in good shape.

“The golf course seems to be short enough where the driver won’t be too big an issue, and I’ve been working hard to try to get that back into play, so I’m looking forward to a great week.”

Kim, 25, born in California to Korean parents who immigrated to the US, played in the inaugural Ballantine’s Championship two years ago, when he was a big hit with fans on his way to finishing joint fifth.

After three career victories on the PGA Tour, including the Houston Open earlier this month, followed by an excellent third place at the Masters, he is now looking abroad for his next success.

“Absolutely,” he replied when asked if an overseas win was his next priority. “I signed up again for the European Tour this year and it wasn’t a tough decision.

“I want to play all over the world, and I think it’s important for young players like myself and others to grow the game wherever we can.

“So I’m excited for this chance and I want to thank the European Tour and everyone here in Korea for giving me this opportunity. All I can do is try my best and I’m going to give it everything I have this week.

“To be perfectly honest, I’d like to play more [on the European Tour]. I have such a great time out here. There’s a different feel than the PGA Tour but, at the same time, it’s very relaxing and the players seem to get on a bit better than the PGA Tour. So I’m very happy to be a member.”

Kim, the world No.10, admitted he was a more mature player than when he last played in the Ballantine’s Championship.

“I’ve changed quite a bit as a person and as a golfer. I’m having a lot more fun than I was a couple of years ago. It’s a lot easier for me to come to a tournament and enjoy being out there, enjoy the fans, enjoy the support.

“I don’t know if, physically, I’m a different player, but because I’m more patient, and I’ve had more life experiences, I’m realising how lucky I am to be playing golf for a living and enjoying those moments.”

Kim is joined in the Ballantine’s Championship by Korean icon YE Yang – the first Asian to capture a Major when he triumphed at last year’s PGA Championship and the winner of last week’s China Open.

The stellar field also includes world No.7 Ernie Els, six-time European Tour winner Henrik Stenson and the first two winners of the Ballantine’s Championship, Graeme McDowell and Thongchai Jaidee.

A late addition to the field was Rhys Davies, joint second at last week’s China Open and winner of the Trophée Hassan II in Morocco last month.

The Welshman was due to return home after the China Open but, with European air travel still paralysed by the volcanic dust cloud emanating from Iceland, he opted to stay in Asia and play in Korea.

However, Spain’s Miguel Ángel Jiménez was forced to withdraw from the tournament after being unable to secure a flight from Europe.

The 2010 Ballantine’s Championship, which tees off at Pinx Golf Club on Thursday (22 April), is once again co-sanctioned by the European Tour, Asian Tour and Korea PGA.

Eager Yang seeking back-to-back victories

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

YE Yang is looking for more consistency in his game – and winning two weeks in a row would be perfect proof of that.

The Korean star triumphed in the China Open which finished last Sunday and is one of the leading contenders in this week’s Ballantine’s Championship.

The €2.2 million showpiece tees off this Thursday (22 April) at Pinx Golf Club on Jeju, the picturesque Korean island where Yang was born and raised.

“I haven’t won two weeks in a row before,” he said. “Perhaps that is an issue about me not being as focused in the next tournament after I’ve just won.

“So winning two weeks in a row is another goal for me. I won last week and I have an opportunity to do so again this week, so I’m thinking about how I can do that. It’s about having consistency in my game.”

Yang admitted he had battled through a busy schedule since his historic PGA Championship triumph last August, when he beat Tiger Woods in a thrilling duel to become the first Asian to win a Major.

In that time, he had learned to be patient with his game, he revealed. “Since winning the PGA Championship, it’s been a very hectic schedule for me,” he said.

“You always want to play well but there are always areas that don’t satisfy you or meet your expectations. I mean, how easy would golf be if you could control it the way you want to?

“It’s inevitable you’ll miss some shots but you must focus on how you’ll recover your next shot. If you try to think too much or become obsessed about the shots that go wrong, then it has a negative effect on your game.

“I think having a very positive attitude and focusing on the shot you’re playing right now is important, and it was this attitude that led to last week’s great result.”

The Ballantine’s Championship represents a happy homecoming for Yang. His China Open victory followed an excellent showing at the Masters, where he finished joint eighth, and his sister’s wedding last week added to the celebrations.

“I wanted to win a tournament before I came to Jeju and I was able to do that,” he said. “So it is with a very joyous heart that I return to my hometown.

“I wasn’t able to attend my sister’s wedding because I was playing golf, but I heard it went very well. So for me and for my family right now, a lot of good things are happening.”

Yang is joined in the Ballantine’s Championship by three-time Major winner Ernie Els, world No.10 Anthony Kim and six-time European Tour winner Henrik Stenson.

In addition, the field includes the tournament’s first two champions – Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell, who triumphed in 2008, and Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee.

The Ballantine’s Championship is once again be co-sanctioned by the European Tour, Asian Tour and Korea PGA.

Five of the leading contenders for this week’s Ballantine’s Championship – (from left) Henrik Stenson, Ernie Els, YE Yang, Anthony Kim and Graeme McDowell – raise a glass to the success of the tournament. Yang comes home feeling like a champion

Monday, April 19th, 2010

YE Yang’s latest European Tour triumph has put an extra spring in his step as he prepares to play in his home town Ballantine’s Championship this week.

The Korean icon says it will be “something special” when he tees off in front of family and friends in the €2.2 million showpiece at Pinx Golf Club on the holiday island of Jeju.

Yang cruised to a two-shot victory in the China Open on Sunday, marking a welcome return to the winner’s circle after he became the first Asian to win a Major at last year’s PGA Championship.

“Jeju is my home town where I grew up,” said Yang. “Going back is always fun and exciting and to do it as a champion is that much more sweet.

“Playing in front of my friends and family – like anyone else in professional sport – is something special. After my win last week I will feel really good for a few more weeks, not just this one.

“I guess there will be a few more people rooting for me and my main goal is to leave an impression with them and the sponsors who have invested so much in me. Ultimately, I would like put up a good show worthy of a Major winner.”

Yang is in a rich vein of form with his China Open victory coming immediately after an impressive display at the Masters, where he finished joint eighth.

Yet he admitted the Shanghai win – his third European Tour title – was also a relief after the fanfare that greeted his historic PGA Championship triumph last August, when he famously beat world No.1 Tiger Woods in a thrilling final round duel.

“It is important for me,” he confirmed. “There were some doubters about my game. This win won’t abolish all those doubters but it will alleviate some of the pressure those doubters have put on me.

“There have been some expectations following that Major win. It feels good. I know I still have to work on my game, though.

“Last year, following the PGA Championship, I tried to continue the streak but it didn’t come naturally. However, this season I’ve had some good finishes and a top 10 in the Masters and now this wonderful win so I’m on the right track.”

Yang is joined in the Ballantine’s Championship by two other players in red hot form, Ernie Els and Anthony Kim.

Three-time Major winner Els signalled an impressive return to his best with a pair of victories on the PGA Tour in March at the WGC-CA Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Kim won the Houston Open earlier this month – his third PGA Tour victory – and followed up with an excellent third place at the Masters.

The trio will be joined at the Ballantine’s Championship by Swedish ace Henrik Stenson, who has six European Tour victories to his name and last year captured the biggest title of his career when he won The Players Championship on the PGA Tour by four shots.

In addition, the field includes the tournament’s first two winners – Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell, who triumphed in 2008, and Thai ace Thongchai Jaidee.

The 2010 Ballantine’s Championship, which begins this Thursday (22 April), is once again co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Korea PGA.

Stenson delighted to be returning

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Henrik Stenson loves playing in Asia – the beautiful courses, knowledgeable fans and increasingly intense competition all add up to a rich golfing experience for the likeable Swede.

“I’ve been fortunate to play all over the globe,” says the world No.16. “I enjoy playing internationally and particularly in Asia. I like the people and I’m impressed that so many fans know of us and what we do. The atmosphere is always very good and I’ll keep coming back.

”We, as players, are impressed by the game’s growth in Asia and the host of players coming through the ranks. It was some display by [Korean teenager] Noh Seung Yul in Malaysia recently to become the youngest ever professional to win on the European Tour. This is good for the game of golf and I’m convinced this is only the beginning. We have to look out!”

Stenson’s liking for Asia means he is eagerly anticipating returning to Korea next week for the Ballantine’s Championship, which will once again be played at Pinx Golf Club on the picturesque holiday island of Jeju, and he feels his game is in good shape as he looks to build on an excellent 2009.

He already had six European Tour victories to his name – including the 2007 World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play title – before winning the biggest title of his career last May at The Players Championship on the PGA Tour, compiling a memorable final round of six-under-par 66 at the notorious TPC Sawgrass to win by four shots.

“My game is moving in the right direction and I’ve put in a lot of work, together with my coach Pete Cowen,” he says. “In the last couple of seasons I’ve have been able to elevate my game and I’ve established myself as a top player. This in itself is very gratifying.”

Despite the disappointment of missing the cut in last week’s Masters, Stenson is optimistic about the rest of 2010. “After winning the Players and the WGC Match Play, I’ve proven to myself that I can beat the best. Above all, if I keep progressing and work on the overall aspects of my game, I know the results will come.

“Of course, the Majors are the biggest priority, but it’s a process of continuing to do the right things with my game, my physique, my preparation and so on. It’s all about being able to produce my best stuff on the given day – and make it as tough as I can for the others to beat me!”

Stenson, now 34, has enjoyed a steady rise into golf’s elite bracket. Growing up in Sweden, he always felt he had the ability to make it and his decision to turn professional in 1998 was justified. He finished top of the 2000 Challenge Tour rankings with a record of eight top 10 finishes, including three wins.

“I’d always liked sports,” he recalls. “I was introduced to golf by a friend of the family and found green pastures almost immediately. I was hooked on the game. My dad, Ingemar, then took up golf ‘just to be able to spend some time’ with me. I also believe that growing up in the northern parts of the world really motivates us as there are a few months every year when we are unable to play.

“I never had any doubts about playing for a living, that was my objective from the very beginning. From early on, my biggest influence was always my family. They supported me and drove me around to the different events. Without that support it would have been almost impossible.”

Family continues to be an extremely important part of Stenson’s life – he and wife Emma have two young children, Lisa and Karl, and while away on tour he keeps in close contact with them at their home in Dubai. “There is an absolute need to be able to relax and take time away from golf,” he stresses. “My wife and I are proud parents of two wonderful and spirited kids. My family makes it very easy to relax and switch off.

“We call Dubai home. It’s a convenient base between Asia, Europe and the US. I’ve been there for a long time now and have a few good friends there. It’s ideal to practise in Dubai because of the weather and the facilities. The local people support me and I enjoy having a couple of home events on the European schedule.”

Stenson will arrive in Korea looking to improve on his display at last year’s Ballantine’s Championship when he never really troubled the leaders. He eventually finished joint 52nd in an event that took place in freakishly cold and windy weather.

“Jeju is a beautiful spot and the course played really challenging last year,” he says. “The organisation and the people were very good. We were treated very well and it’ll be great to see everybody again. I’m looking forward to getting back there, but I have to admit I hope the conditions will be somewhat kinder to us this year.”

The Ballantine’s Championship, the first European Tour event to be played in Korea, will once again be co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Korea PGA.

Joining Stenson in the €2.2 million showpiece from 22-25 April will be three-time Major champion Ernie Els and Korean hero Yang Yong Eun, who became Asia’s first ever Major winner when he captured the PGA Championship last year. The line-up will also include PGA Tour star Anthony Kim, European Tour legend Miguel Angel Jiménez, the tournament’s 2008 champion, Graeme McDowell, and last year’s winner Thongchai Jaidee.

Stenson is relishing being part of such a strong line-up. “I don’t travel halfway around the globe if I don’t believe I have a chance of winning,” he insists. “I think a good field only adds to the excitement for the fans. I’m sure there’ll be a healthy challenge by the Asian contingent as well. Hopefully we’ll have to fight it out all the way to the finish line!”

Ajax to make Soccer Sevens debut

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Dutch giants Ajax will make their debut in the HKFC IP Global International Soccer Sevens next month, it was announced today.

English club Sunderland will also make their first appearance in the tournament and will be joined by Premier League rivals Aston Villa, Birmingham City and West Ham United.

Last year’s Soccer Sevens winners Glasgow Celtic are returning to defend their title while the team they beat in the final, arch rivals Rangers, will also be back.

Former Manchester United and England striker Andy Cole will lead his own team in the Masters competition while other ex-Premier League players will feature for the IP Global All Stars, Southampton Veterans and Nottingham Forest All Stars.

Cole was guest of honour at Hong Kong Football Club today as the draw for the 2010 tournament took place.

“It’s a great opportunity for me,” he said. “Hong Kong is a lovely place and I’m looking forward to coming back out here next month to play some football and to enjoy myself. I’m in the gym four times a week, so I keep myself in shape. I’ve got a charity game for United on 1 May so I’ll be using that to get myself ready for the Soccer Sevens.”

Ajax rank as one of the world’s greatest clubs, with four European Cup triumphs and countless domestic titles to their name, and tournament organisers were delighted to announce their participation.

“It is no exaggeration to say that the Ajax youth academy has produced more truly great players than any other club in world football, including the legendary Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard, Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Kluivert, to name just a few,” said Soccer Sevens chairman Tony Bratsanos. “We are extremely excited to be seeing the next generation of Ajax stars in action here in Hong Kong.

“Andy Cole, meanwhile, has been one of the modern era’s great strikers. He won the Champions League, five Premier League titles and two FA Cups with Manchester United, was capped 15 times for England, and ranks second in the all-time list of top Premiership scorers with 187 goals – all adding up to a truly fantastic career. I’m sure Hong Kong fans are looking forward to seeing him in action.”

The 2010 HKFC IP Global International Soccer Sevens will be held from 14-16 May at Hong Kong Football Club with a total of 32 teams taking part, 16 in the Main competition and 16 in the Masters.

Since it was first staged in 1999, the tournament – sanctioned by the Hong Kong Football Association – has developed into the world’s premier seven-a-side soccer event. The Main competition has become famous for unearthing the “stars of tomorrow” while the Masters section features former elite players from Europe’s top leagues.

Today’s draw saw Ajax grouped in Pool A of the Main competition with Hong Kong club Tai Po, English amateurs Sheffield FC – the oldest club in the world – and Singapore Cricket Club.

Champions Celtic are the top seeds in Pool D, which is rounded out by Birmingham City, Hong Kong side Happy Valley and the hosts, Hong Kong Football Club.

Tickets for the 2010 HKFC IP Global International Soccer Sevens will go on sale from Thursday, 15 April.

A weekend pass (Saturday and Sunday) will cost HK$200 per adult while a day pass (Saturday or Sunday) will be HK$120 per adult. Admission on the Friday evening is free for all spectators while children under the age of 16 are admitted free throughout the tournament.

Before the big kickoff, fans will have a chance to see two more famous names at the eve-of-tournament Sportsman’s Dinner at HKFC on Thursday, 13 May. Iconic football commentator John Motson will be the guest speaker while current Premier League referee Martin Atkinson will also be giving his views on the game.

Details of how to purchase tickets for the Soccer Sevens and Sportsman’s Dinner, plus a wealth of other information about the tournament, can be found at the official website, www.hksoccersevens.com.

My Round – with Anthony Kim

Monday, April 12th, 2010

In the final part of a series of quick-fire interviews with some of the leading players who will be appearing at the forthcoming Ballantine’s Championship in Korea, ANTHONY KIM unwinds with a glass of Ballantine’s in the clubhouse bar.

What’s your favourite golf course?
Every course I win on.

Which player do you most admire?
Tiger Woods.

What’s the best shot you’ve ever hit?
My approach shot on the par-four 12th in the third round of the Houston Open earlier this month. I’d pulled my drive and left myself with a lot to do – a tough shot in from an awkward stance with a pond on the other side of the green, but I took a wedge and hit it to within a foot for birdie. I told my caddie, “If I don’t hit this perfectly, it’s going to go 50 yards in the water.”

Do you get nervous?
Absolutely!

What’s your most treasured possession?
My dog, Rocky.

Who or what makes you laugh?
My friends.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a professional golfer?
Really tough question! I honestly can’t say.

When was the last time you shouted at the TV?
About five minutes ago!

What are you good at that people may not know?

Celtic braced for title defence

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Celtic’s status as defending champions will make them even more determined to put on a good performance at next month’s HKFC IP Global International Soccer Sevens, according to club legend Danny McGrain.

The Scottish giants are looking forward to returning to Hong Kong Football Club, scene of their triumph a year ago when they beat arch-rivals Rangers 1-0 in the final.

“We’re delighted to be returning to Hong Kong in May and, as last year’s winners, it’s very important for us to return to try and retain the trophy we won,” said coach McGrain.

“The tournament is very well organised and has good facilities. It’s an important tournament for us and has in the past resulted in good football.

“The short games obviously suit the humid atmosphere and ball control is very important as you don’t want to be chasing the game in the kind of heat we will be playing in.”

McGrain, one of the all-time great fullbacks who played 663 games for Celtic and earned 62 Scotland caps, said the trip to the Soccer Sevens would also bring other benefits to the squad.

“Hong Kong is a fascinating place to visit and it will be good for the young players to see other cultures. It’s always a fantastic life experience for them,” he said.

The 2010 HKFC IP Global International Soccer Sevens will be held from 14-16 May with a total of 32 teams taking part, 16 in the Main competition and 16 in the Masters.

Since it was first held in 1999, the tournament – sanctioned by the Hong Kong Football Association – has developed into the world’s premier seven-a-side soccer event.

The Main competition has become famous for unearthing the “stars of tomorrow” while the Masters section features former elite players from Europe’s top leagues.

Celtic have been regular visitors to the tournament, twice finishing runners-up in the Main competition – to Blackburn Rovers in 1999 and Aston Villa in 2008 – before winning it for the first time last year.

They have unearthed plenty of stars in the years they have been competing in the Soccer Sevens, including Stephen McManus, Craig Beattie, Shaun Maloney and Liam Miller.

One of the stars of last year’s victory, winger Niall McGinn, has made 15 appearances for the first team in the Scottish Premier League this season, scoring two goals.

Striker Paul McGowan, who scored the winner in last year’s final, has also featured for the first team this season with the highlight being a dramatic injury-time goal that rescued a 3-3 draw for Celtic away to Rapid Vienna in the Europa League.

The draw for the 2010 Soccer Sevens will be held on Tuesday, 13 April, at Hong Kong Football Club, starting at 12:30pm.

Manchester United legend Andy Cole, who has entered his own all-star team in the tournament, will be guest of honour at the draw.

Ticketing details and a wealth of other information about the tournament can be found at the official website, www.hksoccersevens.com.
